TRIUMPH, RITUAL, REMEMBRANCE: SONYA ARTISTS CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Tillies of Brooklyn, 248 DeKalb Avenue | Vanderbilt. A small works show of original art featuring the work of Pamella Allen, Kennis Baptiste, Trevor Brown, Ramona Candy, Sadikisha Collier, Carol Foy, Kathleen Hayek, Charlotta Janssen, Katrina D. Jeffries, Louis Mims and Sasha Shaw.


ACTNOW: NEW VOICES IN BLACK CINEMA SCREENING SERIES

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOVIE & ART EXHIBIT
Tuesday, February 8 and Wednesday, February 9
Cumberland Diagnostic & Treatment Center, 100 North Portland Avenue | Park. The medical center present a screening of "Gifted Hands," a biographical drama about famed Neurosurgeon Ben Carson and his inspiring life story, and "Art Heals Mind, Body & Spirit", an exhibit presented by the Museum of African Art, the Greater New York Hospital Association & Empire BlueCross BlueShield. RUBIN HURRICANE CARTER SPEAKS @ GREENLIGHT

Dr. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, former boxing champion falsely convicted of a crime, and inspiration for the 1999 film The Hurricane and a song by Bob Dylan, will talk about his new book, Eye of the Hurricane: My Path from Darkness to Freedom, which chronicles metaphoric and physical prisons he has survived. He will also answer questions from the audience.

New York State Assembly Member Hakeem Jeffries and District Leader Olanike Alabi will be honored at this New York City and National Historic landmark built just before the Civil War.



EXHIBITIONS, A MIXER & LITERARY SALON @ MoCADA

Exhibits Re-Imagining Haiti: Le Projet Nouveau and Re-Imagining Haiti: Standing With Papa Legba, are now on view through May 8.  Mixer: I ♥ Haiti, co-presented with Story Corps, will feature Haitian music, food and poetry focused on a “re-imagined” vision of Haiti, Sunday, February 13th, 4:00-7:00pm. Story Corps will be on site to collect interviews from the audience based on the exhibitions themes. On Wednesday, February 23, 6:30-8:30pm, MoCADA and the Haiti Cultural Exchange will host a Literary Salon featuring, Haiti Noir, the new anthology edited by award-winning Haitian-American author, Edwidge Danticat. Some of the contributing authors will read from the book and speak about their work in relation to the idea of “re-imagining” Haiti. A book signing will take place at the conclusion of the evening.

Tuskegee Airmen, Majors Victor Terrelonge and Bill Wheller will tell the story of these American heroes. This is a great opportunity to hear from those who made history. Seating is limited, arrive early.

A special installment of NYWC’s “Writing Aloud” series which presents writers from the NYWC community reading alongside established and emerging writers. For this event Tiphanie Yanique, author and one of National Book Foundation's "5 under 35," reads alongside African American NYWC workshop participants from Prime Time Writers at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Clinton Hill, Women's Prison Association, Brooklyn Vet Center, and Brooklyn Public Library, Bayridge Branch.
